SST Connection

Everybody makes
money mistakes

Most people hate to admit it, but everyone makes mistakes. The good news is that these mistakes can be tremendous learning experiences. Here are some common money mistakes that people often make but we hope you’ll avoid.

Buying something because “everyone has one”
Peer pressure. It’ll get you every time. Ask yourself if you really need it, or if it’s a fad that’ll pass in a week.

Not paying credit cards off every month
The interest charges just keep adding up, then you start paying interest on the interest.

Not saving regularly
Every time you get some money, put part of it in your SST account. Make it a habit and before you know it you’ll have a small fortune.

Writing PINs on an ATMor debit card
It’s supposed to be a secret! If someone else gets hold of it, they’ll drain your account.

Giving out your Social Security number
Never use it for identification purposes. If the college or university of your choice wants to use it as your student ID ask if they can assign you a different number.

We often learn from our mistakes, but sometimes it’s less painful to learn from other people’s mistakes. AltaOne hopes you learn the easy way and not make these common
and unfortunate mistakes.

Be cell phone smart

Being the fastest text messager in your class doesn’t mean you’re a cell phone expert. Here are some other things you should know:

New cell phone laws
Starting July 1, 2008, drivers under the age of 18 will no longer be able to operate a motor vehicle while talking on a cell phone. If you're
over 18 you can still talk while driving but only with a hands-free device. If you're caught violating either of these new laws you could be fined $20 for the first offense and $50 for subsequent violations.

Get a family plan
Buy one pool of monthly minutes that everyone in your family can use. They’re usually much cheaper than individual plans. Research them at www.wirefly.com or www.point.com and talk to your parents.

Free 411 calls
Instead of paying to get a phone number, call 800/ FREE411 (373-3411). You’ll have to listen to a 10-second ad, but it’s worth the time.
